Aiutiamo SMOCSA - Help SMOCSA

The story of a single mother

Insomma se volete aiutarla in qualsiasi modo, contattatela oppure contattate me.

I am a single mother to Annaria Evelyn Makula who was born in Kingston Hospital London on Jan 20th 2010. I was raised in hands of two very strong single women, one being my mother Haawa Nassozi, who had 12children and late grandmother who was also a single mother to two children mom and uncle, I managed to see light in this world. I am the second last born, but because the last born passed away as she was 3years, I take the last position. Two of my brothers also passed away, living us nine in total, three gals and six boys.

At NO time did I know I had a father, because I never shared with him anything in life, I happened to see my father when I was 12years old, he very sick, bed ridden and he was left with 6months to die. So I don’t remember sharing a house with my father, it was only when he died that I had to spend a night in the same house as his body was.

I don’t blame my mother for denying me chance to live with dad, because my father abandoned mom and never bothered to look back not even for the sake of his children. And on this note I greatly thank my grandmother the late Bernadette Nabatanzi (R.I.P) and mom for being so strong and brought me up. Who knows what would happen to me if it was not them who had dedicated their lives towards my well being.

I have come to learn of women who poison their children because they were abandoned by men. Lucky enough my grandmother was a doctor in Mulago hospital and therefore she managed to provide us with all what we needed. Mom could only stay home to look after us, so grandmom was our dad in that case.

Maybe YES maybe NO the trend of single motherhood is following us in the family. But I don’t mean everyone is single, some are married. So I don’t have much regrets being a single mother since I have witnessed my guardians bring us up without fathers.

To take you briefly through single motherhood side of life, i am sure by the end of this story you would have got answers about the ideas I am putting much effort SMOCSA in Uganda which started as a single mothers, community project and now a non profit making organization to help single mothers and children who have fallen victim of domestic violence, torture, abuse, negligence which has even left some of them dead and others with life time damages.

Much as you could be interested in knowing about the father of my child, I think I will keep that to myself because the story is too long and can take a week to be concluded and back to the issue today which is motherhood. So here I come.
When I had cramping stomach, I rushed to Kingston Hospital in London for emergency treatment; pregnancy test is a must to a woman for the doctor to get a detailed view of what could be wrong. In less than an hour, there comes a nurse with results and tells me that I am pregnant. Joy overwhelms my heart, because any women would love to have a child at one point in life. Upon leaving the hospital, I texted my partner informing him about the pregnancy, quickly I get the response, and open the inbox with utmost anxiety, ‘‘I was only interested in having a child when I am 30years old’’ he replies to the message. He was 28years by then. I put back my phone in the hand bag, immediately another message comes in asking me if I had ever slept with another man. Both messages and heartbreaking, were clumsy and any woman was not strong enough would abort or get a miscarriage or a still birth at one point during pregnancy.

In UK, abortion is level and therefore, I could opt to go for that because responses form my partners clearly showed that I was going to be alone for the child. But remember I am a woman who was raised by two very strong women both single mothers, so I had to pick a leaf and give my child a chance to grow.
During my third month of pregnancy, he started telling me he was dating another woman and wondered if I could manage being a second wife. Funny indeed.. As if that was not enough, he posted very romantic photos of him and the new girl friend and facebook to prove to me that what he said was the truth.. He used to call me late in the night while he was sleeping with the woman to make me know what was going on and he used different numbers to confuse me until I was completely fade up of such psychological torture and had to change the phone number. I was puzzled, stressed, lost my head, and what I used to do and say for a couple of months, only God knows and I can only remember in my dreams, and maybe regret why I said what, or did what. It was a period of horror and death, because they used to send me messages abusing me not even minding about the health condition I was in.

Months passed and there I was at 34weeks ready to bring out the little one. Due to the too much stress, I had from him and his new girl friend, I could not escape having a caesarean but thank God I came back alive. There comes a bouncing baby girl, weighing three and half kilograms. Much as I had not forgotten all that happened during pregnancy, I was overwhelmed with joy to carry a lovely baby girl. I wiped as she slept so innocently in my chest..
Exactly three months after Annaria was born, my work permit visa was running out and I decided not to over stay and hence had co travel back to Uganda.. I was so angry at this man and hardly wanted to see or speak to him. He came to see his baby at my sisters house where I stayed, and after long twist, he managed to pay for a 1bedroom house for me for 4months. He kept on telling me how he had stopped moving on with the other woman, but as you know that truth never hides, it emerged that the woman was pregnant.

That was the end of him and me and the beginging of my single motherhood and maybe suffering for a short while with a baby he gave himself excuse telling people that i forced him to have a child with him because he is so handsome. He never looked back, not even to pay rent, buy food or any support for the baby or even buy milk for the baby who never got chance to breastfeed because the stress he caused me during pregnancy, left me anemic, developed postnatal pressure, depressed and hardly had breast milk to feed the baby. And he warned me against going to FIDA which helps women in such situation, telling me that the owner of FIDA is his personal friend so I would only waste my time if I sought help from there.

But remember how I was brought up, I knew, that was not the end of the world, with the child’s dad or without him we would still live and however challenging the situation, I was I managed to overcome it.

It’s a very long true life story but to cut the story short, I was so challenged but as it is my policy never to treat problems as problems but rather as challenges that I must overcome, I decided to put more effort in SMOCSA so that, it goes to a different level to help and support other women who go through the same and never have no one to help them.

At the moment we have 250 single mothers registered in the organization and 328children below the ages of 16years, but we intend to recruit more as funds become available. I always share my experience as a single mother with other women to encourage them, to advise the on possible ways of dealing with children with out their fathers so that they don’t kill their children because men have left them, they don’t commit suicide because of being single mothers. Children are gifts from God and hence we much be thankful to God and show appreciation by doing all what is possible to raise them.
However bad our partners could be or we ourselves could be to our partners, its none of those children’s concern. We must not abandon our children our blame these innocent souls for our situations, the best decision a mother would do is to strive to look after her children in all situations. We should treat problems as challenges to see them pass, as our motto states, ‘‘every hardship is an opportunity to strengthen ourselves’’. We must always look upon God to bring mend our broken hearts, HIM alone has strong
